Or, you might say, we hit a boast. (That’s some squash lingo for you non-squashers out there.) Essentially, we’ve changed directions, yet the heart of our mission remains the same. And we’ve learned that the bonds we’ve forged with our CSA kids cannot be broken. If anything, they’ve only become stronger in this challenging time. And trust us, it is challenging. Here’s a quick summary of what we’ve seen: • 65% of our families have had parents/guardians experience job loss or a change in job due to COVID-19 • 30% of our families are struggling with food and supply shortages • 80% of our scholars are experiencing significant challenges with online learning The longer this wages on, the more likely those percentages will increase, especially since the populations we serve are disproportionately impacted by this pandemic. Additionally, recent events have further highlighted the importance of the work we are doing. Now more than ever we need to prioritize the health & well being of our students, to remove barriers, to stand in solidarity against racial injustice, and to build a future where every child has a chance to succeed. That’s precisely where the Cincinnati Squash Academy comes in. For the past two months, we’ve provided connections to resources, direct support and supplies, and transitioned our programming online. We’ve already completed two weeks of a four-week virtual summer camp, including fitness sessions, a TED Talk series, guest speakers from the community, and social/emotional learning activities.
